Everyone likes to play a surprise weapon every now and then, but here are 100 of them packed together in one book. Burgess gives each a soundness rating out of five and also a surprise value, whilst it is very easy to quickly learn one just before a game as each page has three diagrams down the left-hand side. Burgess' ideas are usually good, whilst his analysis is also quite reasonable. He does point out potential flaws, whilst it is surprising as to just how many of these lines have found their way into my repertoire! Surprises are clearly good! Naturally one should also do a bit of analysis on each idea and check out a few more games in the line on ChessBase, whilst many of the 101 ideas are surprising largely because they have been overlooked by the main theoretical tomes.
